During your stay we recommend that you consider visiting the traditional churches in town, which reflect the history of Monterrey since its foundation. You will be able to appreciate different architectural trends and styles in these buildings.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Monterrey

The Cathedral is a historical monument; here you can appreciate different architectural styles such as Baroque, Neo-classic and Art Deco. It is Located in the heart of the city, on General Zuazua Street, right in front of the “Macroplaza”. It is a key piece in Monterrey’s history. It served as a strategic place for the defense of the city during the American invasion in 1846. The Cathedral also hosted the Pope Juan Pablo II during his visit to Monterrey in 1990.

Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

This contemporary church started its construction on May 30th, 1978, and opened its doors on December 11th, 1982. Located on Castelar Street by the Independencia neighborhood, this church receives thousands of Catholics every year. A traditional practice among Catholics is to walk a very long distance from a certain place to the “Basilicas”, on December 12th, during the Virgin of Guadalupe Day.

Sagrado Corazon de Jesus

Located on Zaragoza and 5 de Mayo Streets, this church was constructed from 1873 to 1903; it has a beautiful facade made out of clay. In its interior you can appreciate the mysticism of the gothic style construction with stained-glass windows in its interior.

San Luis Gonzaga

Constructed between the years 1898 to 1923, this church is located on Hidalgo and Cuauhtémoc Street where the “Seminario de Monterrey” was found before. The church has a neo-gothic style architecture where the interior design holds golden multi form shapes that frame the walls.

Basilica La Purisima Concepcion de Maria

The construction of this church dates from 1719, when it was just a little chapel. On May 19th 1942 the final reconstruction of this church started, not finishing until February 14th 1946. The temple is work of Enrique de la Mora who won the National Arquitecture´s Prize with this project. It is located on Serafín Peña and Hidalgo Street, right across from “La Purisima” square. The facade has a modern style and on the Basilica interior you can find precious pieces of sacred art, as well as beautiful glass art.

Basilica del Roble

This temple was built in 1854, located in 15 de Mayo and Juarez streets. This is where the Franciscan missionary, Fray Andres de Leon, hid the image of the “Virgin Maria” inside an oak tree in order to protect it from savage natives. This oak served as the symbolic place for the foundation of the temple.

Capilla de los Dulces Nombres

Constructed in 1838, this was considered national heritage on January 7th of 1938. It is Located at the Macroplaza, in Matamoros and Dr. Coss streets. Its two-bell tower finish is unique. This is a special chapel in Monterrey due to its historical legacy and architecture.
