Since 1995 this important and historic building has been operating as the “Museo Metropolitano de Moterrey”. The building is surrounded by an arched corridor which rests over thick columns topped with capitals of toscan influence.
The history of the building goes back to the year 1612 when it was built to host the “Palacio Municipal de Monterrey” (Old Monterrey City Hall).
The building had to be rebuilt several times due to damage as a result of floods suffered by the city; finally, in 1887 the building was completed with the appearance it has today.
In 1974 this beautiful building, a showcase of northeast architecture, was labeled by the Federal Government (INAH) as a National Historic Monument.
It is located in front of the Zaragaoza Square in the heart of the historical down town. The Metropolitan Museum of Monterrey presents its visitors the best of art and culture, reaffirming the past, present and future of our city.
Through its showrooms, the Museum offers a historic journey from the city foundation, as well as important exhibits of work from some of the must distinguish local artists.
It is now under remodeling due to old artifacts found in recent excavations, such as tools, handcrafts, bones, Jars and a deep water well used by the settler's.
