Monterrey, City of Mountains

geografia.jpg

Monterrey is known as "The City of Mountains" due to the natural beauty of its topography, which is sure to make any visitor or resident fall in love with it.

During your visit you will observe: the Sierra Madre Oriental, at the south of the city; the Huasteca, at the southwest; the Cerro de Las Mitras, at the west; the Cerro del Topo Chico, at the northwest; and finally, the famous Cerro de la Silla, at the southeast.

The Cerro de la Silla is an icon of the city; it has a height of 1.770 meters above sea level. Its name is due to the fact that it resembles a horse’s saddle, as was noticed by conqueror Alberto del Canto in 1577. This hill has been considered a natural monument of the nation by presidential decree since 1991.

Cerro de las Mitras can offer a picturesque snow capped view, depending on the winter. Its name is due to the fact that it resembles the shape of a high and pointed hat like the one the catholic bishops wear.

La Huasteca is a mountain located to the South in the city of Santa Catarina, Nuevo Leon. It was formed by a series of high crags that draw round the Canyon of La Huasteca. Its rocky formation is perfect for hiking, rock climbing and other activities.

Sierra Madre Oriental is a huge mountain chain that crosses municipalities like San Pedro and the south side of Monterrey. Its hills have the form of an "M". Here is where the Ecological Park Chipinque is located, a beautiful place full of vegetation, forests and regional fauna.

Cerro del Topo Chico (Hill of the Small Mole) attributes its name to the resemblance that it has with the moles or dogs of the meadow. It is famous for its springs and thermal water. It is considered an inactive volcano.

Cerro del Obispado is considered a historical hill for many reasons. Its name was given due to the Episcopal residence that was built there in the 18th century. Today it hosts the “Obispado Museum” and the “Obispado Asta Bandera View point”, where you will be fascinated with the spectacular panoramic view of the city.

Enjoy Monterrey’s mountains, here you will be able to practice extreme sports, ecotourism or just take a relaxing afternoon in the fresh air and nature.
