Monterrey Museums

Visiting Monterrey is an enriching experience as it offers interesting museums with diverse contents; some of those preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the city, the State and Mexico. The museums offers national and international expositions and some museums presents their own collections to be exhibited in other cities. Most of them are also used as venues for concerts, conferences, book presentations, seminars and workshops.
Among the recommended History Museums to visit are Metropolitan Museum of Monterrey which document the city’s history since its foundation until it became the industrial capital of the country. The Palacio de Gobierno Museum exhibits Nuevo Leon’s history and other relevant things such as its economical growth, its law, and some important state personalities. The Obispado Museum located in this original building constructed in 1787, displays an excellent example of the colonial architecture with eight rooms for all kinds of expositions. The Mexican History Museum shows the timeline from the Pre-Hispanic era to the modern era and the different ecosystems found in the country. The recently inaugurated Northeast Museum offers a historical exhibition that reflects the regional economical, social and cultural contribution between Nuevo León, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Texas.
For art lovers, this City has one of the best museums of contemporary art in Mexico and Latin America: MARCO (Contemporary Art Museum) whose building was designed by the famous architect Ricardo Legorreta. At the main entrance, a sculpture by Juan Soriano, La Paloma, welcomes visitors. This museum exhibits and owns an important collection of contemporary art.
It’s worth visiting other atractive venues where diverse artistic activities and exhibits take place such as: Casa de la Cultura de Monterrey (The House of Culture), Antiguo Colegio Civil (Former State University Building), the Centro Cultural Universitario (State University Cultural Center) and the Centro de las Artes (Arts Center)located in Fundidora Park. Each one has a theater where diverse shows and performances presents and are also venues for concerts, conferences and plastic arts exhibits.
The Glass Museum and the Steel Museum inside Fundidora Park are two important museums with permanent exhibitions dedicated to show the industrial history that characterizes the city. The first one exhibits the history of Vidriera Monterrey (Vitro) and promotes glass art. The second one has an important exposition dedicated steel industry, which has been an important icon in Monterrey’s industrial development for years.
Another cultural alternative is Centro Cultural Alfa, a modern interactive museum with an IMAX dome and an observatory.
