Barrio Antiguo


This is perhaps one of the most visited sites in the city. The Barrio Antiguo (Old Quarter) is an extensive area of old houses that have retained their history and character, located in the heart of the city behind the Metropolitan Cathedral, which has successfully survived in time. Protected by a decree in 1988, the area has undergone several renovations and has been complemented with the beautiful Paseo Santa Lucia (Santa Lucia River Walk). The oldest houses date from the seventeenth century and belonged to the first families who settled in this city, others are from the XVIII, XIX and XX Century.
It is an experience to walk these streets with little lampposts illuminating the way amongst different architectural styles, galleries, and antique stores.
